Breast Augmentation Risks

Breast augmentation can have some risks, including capsular contracture, implant displacement, implant deflation or rupture, mammography interference, rippling, breast feeding, nipple numbness, infection and the need for further surgery.

Placing the implants over the muscle can increase the risk of capsular contraction. However, saline implants have a lower risk. Capsular contraction is a type of scar that forms around one, or both, implants. This not only makes implants look unnatural and hard, but also could be painful. In many cases, surgery is needed and a new implant has to be placed.

An implant displacement is when, after the surgery, an implant moves up, down, left or right. In many cases, the patient will not notice, but if the implant moved enough for a patient to notice, a second surgery might be needed.

There is a difference when a saline and a silicone implant deflates or ruptures. With a silicone implant, the body does not absorb the gel. This is not dangerous, but you must seek attention immediately. In some cases capsular contracture may occur. With saline implants, if rupture occurs the implant will deflate to the pre-operative size in one to two days. The risk of a deflation to occur is less than 4 percent.

A breast implant is most likely to interfere with the ability of an accurate mammography reading due to the obstruction that the implant may cause. On the other hand, the technology that an MRI or an ultrasound offers will ensure an accurate reading, and the implants will not interfere. It is important that even though technology is significant to a breast exam, any lump can be detected with a self breast examination.

Rippling is common among implants that are overfilled and over the muscle. It is what it sounds like, the breast looks like it has wrinkles. Silicone implants are less common to ripple than saline.

Although infection after surgery occurs less than 2 percent of the time, it is important to consider the possibility. When this occurs, it is typically treated with antibiotics and in some cases, the removal of the implants. With this and other risks, surgery is required and the waiting period could exceed six months before a new implant can be placed.

No surgeon can guarantee that your nipple sensation will return. There is a risk of 15 percent that of nipple numbness will be permanent. However, the ability to breastfeed will not interfere. When pregnant or breastfeeding, the breasts will only increase their size and decrease after the breastfeeding term. The only risk is that because of the stretching of the skin your breast can sag and not return to the pre-pregnancy size.
